“One Car Coming; One Car Going”. 9.5" x 12.5". Oil on board. Framed. Wired. Bumpered.

This is another scene I looked at many, many times before I painted it. I probably photographed it six or eight times. It’s interesting because Marine Drive, where there near car is traveling, is higher elevation than the camera-eye. We’re not at street level, but crouched a little. So every time I looked, it jumped out as being more dramatic, down low in this gritty scene.

That’s Gimre’s Shoes—one of those stores. The oldest shoe store on the west coast, I hear. The Norblad Hotel is in the background.

And these streaking cars did it for me. I often take reference photos and imagine cars and out of the scene as though they’re intrusions. But I loved how these cars criss-cross, west and east.

It's another one that needs Booker T. and the M.G.s for a soundtrack.
